Germany-based company Luoro has partnered with Norwegian carton manufacturer Elopak to provide carton packaging for Luoro's oral hygiene brand Paperdent.

Paperdent is a subsidiary of Luoro and is claimed to be the first mouthwash brand to use Elopak’s D-PAK carton packaging for its range of vegan, alcohol-free mouthwash products.

This move will further result in minimising the overall plastic content in Paperdent’s packaging by up to 80% when compared to the other traditional packaging solutions for mouthwash.

Available in 500ml, Elopak said its D-PAK cartons are made using sustainably sourced paperboard that comes from responsibly managed forests.

The company said that this carton range is completely recyclable and carbon neutral.

Elopak is responsible for filling the mouthwash from Paperdent directly into the cartons at its newly built test facility in Terneuzen, the Netherlands.

The Terneuzen plant specialises in addressing the requirements of small-scale producers and startups. It manages small-scale filling and initial market trials, primarily in the non-food segment.

Since May, Paperdent’s mouthwash featuring this new packaging has become available for purchase via online platforms, as well as at select pharmacies and supermarket stores located across Germany and Austria.

On one face of the new mouthwash package, Paperdent has displayed advantages and details about the new packaging to help inform customers.

Luoro CEO and co-founder Louis Bahlmann said: “We chose Elopak’s carton packaging for various reasons.

“On the one hand, because of the significant reduction in plastic compared to a conventional plastic bottle.

“On the other hand, because this packaging is mainly made from wood, a renewable raw material, and therefore has a low carbon footprint. And we were also impressed by the recyclability.”

Collaboration between the two companies commenced less than a year ago and is already set to provide more options to eco-conscious consumers.
