Protective packaging supplier Macfarlane Group has reported a reduction of 1,420 tonnes (t) or 22% in absolute carbon emissions (scope 1 and 2) in 2023.
This milestone was highlighted in the company’s Sustainability Report for 2023 released yesterday (30 May).
The report also notes a 37% reduction in carbon intensity when factoring in the company’s 25% revenue growth.
Over the year, Macfarlane managed to segregate approximately 92% of its waste for recycling, with the remaining waste contributing to energy generation.
Additionally, the group’s recycling division recycled 7,332t of packaging waste, marking an increase of 292t from the previous year.
As part of its commitment to reducing environmental impact, Macfarlane Group has integrated five fully electric trucks into its delivery fleet and converted 33% of its company cars to electric vehicles.
The group noted that 89% of its electricity is now being supplied from certified renewable sources.
The company also opened a second Packaging Innovation Lab in Heywood, near Manchester.
Macfarlane sustainability head David Patton said: “Our 2023 Sustainability Report shows progress across a number of areas as we reduce our own impact on the environment but also work with our customers and suppliers to reduce theirs.
“We will continue to build on this progress and use our position to advance our social agenda too; supporting our colleagues, creating a great place to work and being a force for good in the local communities where we operate.”
Macfarlane, headquartered in Glasgow, Scotland, employs more than 1,000 people across 40 sites, mainly in the UK and Europe.
The company serves more than 20,000 customers in the UK and Europe, offering protective packaging solutions to sectors such as food manufacturing, logistics, internet retail, and others.
