Macfarlane Packaging launches new system to build cardboard boxes

The solution is suitable for digital and multichannel retailers who pack high volumes of small packages.

Protective packaging distributor Macfarlane Packaging has launched a new rapid box assembly system intended for cardboard boxes.

Developed by Macfarlane’s Innovation Lab team, the new patent-pending solution is claimed to help deliver up to 70% packing efficiency.

According to the company, the new system scales up operational productivity by reducing typical manual box assembly times from ten seconds to less than three seconds.

The 3D-printed units can assemble boxes up to 400mm x 300mm, with variable options on depth.

It is suitable for digital and multichannel retailers that package a high volume of small packages.

In addition, the packaging equipment is compatible with Macfarlane-exclusive box designs that enhance performance strength while minimising the usage of materials.

This will result in increasing pallet fill and reducing transportation costs as well as CO₂ emissions.

Macfarlane Packaging design head Richard Garratt said: “With an increasing number of businesses trying to balance the complexities of supply chain efficiency and operational cost reduction alongside sustainability this is a potential game changer for some Macfarlane customers.

“The rapid box assembly and exclusive box designs were developed at our Innovation Labs and represent an opportunity for customers to reduce pack times, lower costs, cut material use and lower overall CO₂ associated with their packaging.”

In April this year, Macfarlane Packaging opened a new 5,000ft² packaging ‘Innovation Lab’ to meet future packaging challenges.
