Polish printed decorative packaging solutions provider Masterpress has signed a commitment letter to join the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), an independent global sustainability body.
Masterpress will be working closely with the SBTi to validate its greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions reduction roadmap aligned with the Paris Agreement which sets the goal of limiting global warming to 1.5°C.
The company aims to reduce its Scope 1 [directly emitted by assets it owns or controls] and Scope 2 [indirectly emitted from its purchased services or commodities] GHG emissions 42% by 2030 from a base year of 2022.
Masterpress will also work with SBTi to develop its Scope 3 GHG emissions target during this period.
General manager Jeroen de Haan commented: “This is not the beginning of our journey, as for many years we have been innovating with sustainable and recyclable products and materials on the market. But you cannot improve what you don’t measure.”
Masterpress has taken additional actions to improve its sustainable operations, including the reduction of packaging weight, the optimisation of packaging for specific products, the reduction of virgin plastic such as testing plastic sleeve labels with 50% recycled content, and the use of hybrid printing machines with energy-efficient LED drying.
Masterpress recently received EcoVadis Silver Certification, rising from a previous Bronze, demonstrating an improvement in the company’s sustainability management system.
In early 2024, the company expanded its research and development lab located in Białystok, Poland.
