Metsä Board’s products gain home compostability certification

The verification adds to the products' existing industrial compostability certification.

Metsä Board, a paperboard supplier, has secured home compostability certification for its white kraftliners and folding boxboards, excluding polyethylene-coated grades.

This certification, granted by DIN CERTCO, affirms the products' compliance with the NF T 51-800 standard.

The company's paperboards, crafted from fresh wood fibres, are claimed to be safe for sensitive end-use applications.

Produced using predominantly fossil-free energy, Metsä's paperboards are also lightweight and reduce the carbon footprint across the packaging value chain.

Metsä Board product safety manager Helena Moring-Vepsäläinen said: "All our paperboards can be recycled, which is the preferable option when the packaging or foodservice container has served its purpose. But sometimes the packaging material can be stained by food, and then composting with biowaste is a good choice.

“Our paperboards have had industrial compostability certification for several years now, and home compostability is one step further which is certainly welcomed by consumers.”

Metsä Board, a part of Metsä Group, is claimed to be one of the leading European producers of premium fresh fibre paperboards, specialising in lightweight and high-quality folding boxboards, foodservice boards, and white kraftliners.

The company reported sales of €2.5bn ($2.7bn) in 2022 and employs approximately 2,250 people.

Metsä aims to achieve completely fossil-free mills and raw materials by 2030.

In November last year, it teamed up with industry partners to redesign the packaging of an ice-cream cone product range with lower climate impact.
