Sustainable packaging and paper leader Mondi has partnered with Scan Sverige, a business unit of agricultural cooperative Lantmännen, on recyclable packaging known as WalletPack.
Mondi’s WalletPack solution is being used for the Pärsons brand’s range of sliced ham, salami and plant-based products from March 2024.
The polypropylene solution replaces the previous unrecyclable multi-material pack that consisted of polyethylene terephthalate and polyamide/polyethylene laminates.
The new material is certified as 93% recyclable by the Institut cyclos-HTP and can be sorted by Site Zero, an advanced plastic recycling facility located in Sweden.
WalletPack features a top and bottom film with a peel mechanism and a protective high oxygen barrier for shelf-life.
Scan Sverige and Mondi initiated discussions about the introduced mono-material packaging in 2022 and collaborated to develop the WalletPack solution for Pärsons.
Scan Sverige category manager Eva Tiedman commented: “The WalletPacks will be used on a wide range of sliced products for Pärsons’ cold cuts. Our objective was to follow a forward-thinking approach to packaging sustainability as we are investing in getting 100% recyclable packaging by the end of 2025 and working hard to change to recyclable mono-materials.”
Mondi regional sales Nordic consumer flexibles Helene Brynell added: “It was a pleasure working with Scan Sverige, bringing over a century of experience in responsible Swedish food production to the table. The team closely oversees the full farm-to-fork value chain, which seamlessly aligns with our values.”
Mondi recently secured a Platinum certification via EcoVadis’ corporate social responsibility ratings.
