The new packaging is said to deliver high resistance against oxygen and water vapour.

Global paper and packaging company Mondi has partnered with Sweden-based dairy producer Skånemejerier to develop a monomaterial, polypropylene-based packaging solution for Skånemejerier's cheese products.

As part of this partnership, Mondi produces and prints monomaterial base web and lidding films, which are then transformed into packaging for Skånemejerier’s 1kg and 2kg blocks of cheese.

This cheese product with new recyclable packaging will be sold in major Swedish supermarket ICA.

According to Mondi, the monomaterial solution delivers high resistance against both oxygen and water vapours, making it ideal for storage on supermarket shelves.

In addition, it is said to offer high puncture resistance and printability for brand promotion.

Skånemejerier packaging manager Ingemar Jönsson said: “Our collaboration with Mondi has been a thorough process: we started our first test and trials in 2019 and are delighted to be bringing this fully recyclable packaging to market before the end of 2023.

“The great working relationship we had, meant that we were able to adapt materials and machinery efficiently, resulting in a successful, fit-for-purpose solution. We have strong, effective and good-looking packaging that keeps materials in the loop and responds to consumer demands for more sustainable solutions.”

Mondi and Skånemejerier launched the new packaging ahead of the opening of Site Zero, which Mondi claims to be the largest sorting facility for used plastic packaging worldwide.

Located in Sweden, the advanced facility is expected to open this month and will process used plastic waste from both Sweden and Finland.

Earlier in September this year, Mondi and Veetee introduced new paper-based dry rice packaging for the UK market.

Analyzing the dynamics of the metaverse in the packaging sector

Many of the vital metaverse technologies are already being used or piloted by packaging companies, who have brought together AI, AR, VR, cloud, the IoT, and other technologies to monitor and maintain key assets remotely. The sector could also use immersive metaverse solutions to optimize packaging design and quality control—testing prototypes in a virtual world before bringing them to market. Another disruptive benefit of the metaverse will be using underlying blockchain and digital twin technologies to assist in creating more transparent and traceable supply chains.
