Mondi unveils sustainable alternative to expanded polystyrene packaging

The 100% paper-based industrial packaging provides protection for goods.

Sustainable packaging and paper manufacturer Mondi announced that its new corrugated solutions offer a sustainable alternative to expanded polystyrene (EPS) packaging for white goods and electronic equipment.

Boasting a 100% recyclability and compostability rate, Mondi said its corrugated solutions offer a vast portfolio of boxes crafted from at least 60% recycled fibres.

Collaboration with customers drives innovation

Mondi said that through collaboration manufacturers have the opportunity to optimise and automate their packaging processes.

The packaging manufacturer said “when designing Snug&Strong corrugated solutions, Mondi gather an entire team of experts to collaborate with customers to understand their production line and packaging requirements.”

Recyclable, efficient, and sustainable

Designed to replace EPS components, these solutions offer recyclability, efficiency, and sustainability.

Mondi's Snug&Strong corrugated solutions tackle the complexities of white goods and electronic packaging. White goods consist of large electrical goods used domestically such as refrigerators and washing machines.

The custom-fit, 100% paper-based industrial packaging not only provides protection for goods but can “ease supply chain complexity.”

Snug&Strong's flat delivery reduces storage and transportation costs, making it a cost-efficient and viable alternative to EPS, balancing protection, cost, and sustainability.

Environmental challenges propel shift away from EPS

EPS microplastics, notorious for contributing more than 40% of plastic debris on Asian beaches, face increasing bans globally. Legislative actions in the EU, the wider Caribbean region, Fiji, the Philippines, and various US regions reflect a collective effort to combat marine plastic pollution.

The ongoing United Nations Treaty on Plastic Pollution involves over 170 nations, steering towards policies targeting the environmental impact of hard-to-recycle plastics.
