Nokia’s Lightspan portfolio to transition to recyclable packaging

The move is in line with both Nokia and Deutsche Telekom's sustainability goals.

Nokia has announced its plans to transition to 100% recyclable packaging for its entire Fixed Networks Lightspan portfolio of broadband access nodes.

The environmentally friendly packaging, which is more compact and lighter in weight than its predecessors, is being introduced to deliver a new generation of gigabit-speed G.fast access nodes to Deutsche Telekom.

The revamped packaging will result in a 60% reduction in size while decreasing the overall weight by 44%, Nokia stated.

This will allow Nokia to increase the number of products shipped per pallet to further minimise its transportation-related carbon dioxide emissions by up to 60%.

Designed for reuse in return shipments, the new sustainable packaging solution is scheduled to roll out by the end of this year.

The buffer material, used for protecting products from any damage from dropping, is also made from 100% recyclable cardboard components, in adherence with certification body the Forest Stewardship Council.

The company said it has completely eliminated the use of non-biodegradable foam, plastic, and toxic materials, as well as chemical treatments for its new packaging.

Nokia Broadband Networks for Fixed head Geert Heyninck said: “Eco-friendly product packaging is a major contributor to our climate and environmental ambitions.

“By using 100% recyclable materials we help to reduce waste and contribute to a circular economy.”

The latest move is in line with Nokia’s commitment to switch to more sustainable and eco-friendly packaging.

In 2022, Nokia launched eco-friendly product packaging for its broadband customer premises equipment.

Nokia also intends to achieve its science-based targets by reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 50% by 2030.

Deutsche Telekom Technology Innovation senior vice-president Arash Ashouriha said: “Deutsche Telekom has set ambitious circularity goals for 2030. We focus on the entire life cycle of our products and everything we buy from our technology suppliers.

“We have already taken out all single-use plastics in the packing of our own ‘T’-branded devices. The collaboration with our technology suppliers like Nokia on innovative ways of sustainable packaging is therefore an essential next step.”

Global food packaging industry witnessing an uptick in demand for personalized packaging

Per GlobalData analysis, the South-East Asia construction industry in 2023 is dominated by Indonesia, though the country will see a slowdown compared to 2022 due to elevated building material prices, weak commercial property demand, high interest rates and a softening of external demand. The construction industry in the Philippines is estimated to register a AAGR of 7.2% between 2024 and 2027, supported by the government’s focus on the development of the country’s rail and road transport and energy infrastructure.
