Glass bottles and jars producer O-I Glass has announced the completion of the development and testing of its mobile glass processing machine.

Named MOGRA, the new machine can be easily transported and deployed to clean and crush recycled glass for use as recycled content.

The MOGRA system can be loaded onto a truck trailer, allowing mobility across O-I's facilities and other locations in the US.

The system facilitates the recycling of glass packaging from various sources into a localised raw material.

According to O-I, the system can be unpacked, plugged in, and made operational within a day.

This enables rapid processing of glass packaging from brewers, distillers, bottlers, or communities into raw material for manufacturing glass with recycled content.

MOGRA can crush glass to a specific size while removing metallic impurities, thereby enhancing the quality of the recycled glass.

The system is reportedly capable of processing up to 6,000 tonnes (t) of glass packaging annually.

O-I chief sustainability and corporate affairs officer Randy Burns said: “MOGRA builds on the long tradition of innovating the sustainable capabilities of glass packaging by enabling O-I to deploy full-service, closed-loop recycling programmes with our customers and local communities, while generating furnace-ready cullet for producing glass packaging with increased recycled content.

“Through the agile, transformative capabilities of MOGRA, O-I is increasing our network capability to pursue our sustainability and recycling goals in an effective manner with a single asset.”

O-I, which is headquartered in Ohio, US, aims to achieve a global average of 50% recycled content in its packaging.

The company stated that it is transforming the manufacturing and recycling of glass with the aim of becoming one of the most sustainable suppliers of brand-building packaging.

“As recycled content continues to be a priority in helping our customers to achieve their sustainability goals, innovative solutions from O-I will help the company to increase the cullet content of our glass packaging and advance the overall sustainability of our packaging options," Burns added.
