National carrier Oman Air has taken a significant step towards sustainability by redesigning the packaging of its economy-class earphones.

The new packaging, made from recyclable kraft paper, replaces the previously used single-use polyethylene terephthalate (PET) foil solution.

This initiative is part of the airline's broader commitment to reducing its environmental footprint and enhancing the onboard experience for passengers.

The collaboration with Linstol, a provider of eco-friendly in-flight products, is expected to result in the elimination of approximately 6.48 tonnes (t) of non-recyclable waste annually.

This change also equates to saving around 110 trees and conserving roughly 207,360 litres of water each year.

Oman Air CEO Con Korfiatis said: "We are delighted to introduce this latest initiative on board, which represents our ongoing commitment to our planet by reducing the environmental impact of air travel, while ensuring our guests enjoy a comfortable and convenient experience that aligns with their values.

“We believe that small changes make a big impact and we continue to look for innovative solutions in all corners of our operations, while promoting and advocating for initiatives that support both the UN Sustainable Development Goals and Oman’s national objectives.”

Last year, Oman Air saved approximately 21.6t of plastic by switching to paper-based wrapping for blankets and mattresses in its premium cabins.

Additionally, the carrier says it has made strides in reducing plastic water bottles and cuplets and has optimised its potable water consumption.

Oman Air is also actively involved in emissions-reduction initiatives and supports the development of sustainable aviation fuels.

These efforts combined align with Oman's national strategy to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050.
