PackSys Global optimises tube production with digital changeover

PackSys previously relied on manual adjustments using mechanical position indicators.

Swiss manufacturer PackSys Global has leveraged digital position indicators from SIKO to enhance process reliability and simplify changeovers in its tube welding machines.

PackSys Global specialises in plastic tube production systems for the cosmetics, pharmaceutical, and oral care industries.

Its focus lies on efficient processes, high output, and user-friendly equipment. A key aspect influencing production reliability is smooth machine changeovers for various tube formats.

Previously, PackSys relied on manual adjustments using mechanical position indicators. This method posed a risk for errors, especially during frequent adjustments across multiple positions.

To address this challenge, PackSys partnered with SIKO, a German sensor and positioning systems specialist, to integrate a monitored changeover solution into its new FlexSeamer tube welding machine.

Why digital?

The solution utilises SIKO's AP05 digital position indicator with an IO-Link interface. This compact device offers several advantages:

Universal applicability: Functions on both vertical and horizontal axes.

Intuitive readability: Features dual LED displays for clear target value confirmation.

Reduced errors: Ensures settings match target values before production begins (green light) and prevents continuation with incorrect settings (red light).

Benefits beyond accuracy

PackSys highlights several benefits beyond improved accuracy:

Faster and easier format changes: Simplifies adjustments and ensures consistent settings for repeatable production.

Reduced reliance on skilled labour: Intuitive operation minimises the need for in-depth machine knowledge.

Enhanced quality control: Consistent settings minimise the need for downstream quality checks.

Beyond the AP05

SIKO offers a range of solutions for various changeover needs. Mechanical position indicators remain suitable for infrequent adjustments or readily noticeable errors.

Additionally, SIKO provides compact, fully automatic positioning drives for effortless size adjustments, particularly in hard-to-reach areas.

Looking ahead

The success of the project is attributed to the close collaboration between PackSys and SIKO.

The AP05's angled display and IO-Link interface were specifically tailored to PackSys' requirements.

PackSys said it anticipates a strong trend towards digitisation and automation, particularly in changeover processes.

Aitor Henao, PackSys' head of marketing and communications, said, in a statement: “These small details, such as the LED display, make all the difference. They improve the quality of our machines and services, helping customer companies to focus on their business.”
