American packaging company Pactiv Evergreen is collaborating with ExxonMobil, a provider of advanced recycling technology, to provide certified circular packaging solutions for the foodservice industry.

As part of this partnership, Pactiv will leverage ExxonMobil’s advanced recycling technology, called Exxtend, to develop and provide certified circular polypropylene (PP) packaging products for various food brands and foodservice providers.

Pactiv said that Exxtend helps widen the range of plastic materials that are suitable for recycling and can offer the same quality and performance as virgin plastics.

The technology is used to break down plastic waste into its molecular building blocks.

These building blocks, using a mass balance approach, can then be transformed into valuable new materials such as PP.

This provided packaging from ExxonMobil is certified circular in accordance with International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC) Plus standards.

ExxonMobil Exact, Vistamaxx, and Polypropylene global marketing manager Olivier Lorge said: “We are excited to work with Pactiv Evergreen and others in the value chain to help create new opportunities to support the circular economy for plastics.

“In the foodservice industry, we see tremendous opportunity to help address consumer demand for more circular products, without sacrificing performance or safety for PP products in food-contact applications.”

Pactiv Foodservice president Tim Levenda added: “Pactiv Evergreen produces more than 14,000 products in 14 different materials that protect, package and display fresh food and beverages.

“Our broad material expertise allows us to support our customers quickly and effectively, and our collaboration with ExxonMobil enables us to offer additional innovative packaging options to our customers with an expanded portfolio of circular packaging.”
