Food and beverage company Paulig has introduced recyclable vacuum coffee packaging in its retail stores across Finland and Estonia.

This move follows a €25m ($27.03m) investment in new packaging lines and palletising cells at the company's CarbonNeutral-certified Vuosaari Roastery in Helsinki, Finland.

As of early this year, one-third of Paulig's 500g coffee packaging units were produced on a new line at the Vuosaari Roastery.

Coffee packaging from this line is reportedly easy to open, requiring no scissors, and features a longer resealing tape that helps to reseal the packaging post-opening.

A few of Paulig's products such as its Paulig Mundo Original and Paulig Café New York, are available in this new packaging format.

The updated packaging aligns with Paulig's goal to make all its packaging recyclable by the end of 2025.

The new packaging features a white interior, which makes it distinguishable yet retains its familiar appearance from the outside.

Paulig packaging R&D manager Kati Randell said: "Most of our coffees are sold in vacuum packaging. The launch of the recyclable coffee packaging will help us to achieve our ambitious sustainability goals.

“As a frontrunner in sustainability, we are now one of the first coffee companies in the world to bring the easy-open recyclable vacuum packaging to coffee lovers. Recyclable vacuum packaging has been developed for many years.

“It has required research and development, investments into our production and over 100 tests by both us and our partners.”
