Phabuilder Biotechnology has collaborated with Hengxin Life Science & Technology to launch marine-degradable straws and cutlery.
The partnership is offering three polyhydroxyalkanoates-(PHA) based products, encompassing straws, coatings, and injection-moulded items.
The companies have already received an order for these products.
Phabuilder's team of experts, which originated from the studies conducted by the research and development team at China's top-tier institute, Tsinghua University, specialises in bioengineering PHA.
The team is focused on using PHA to create tableware that can withstand high temperatures, possesses barrier properties, and offers customisation in terms of colour, transparency, and shape.
According to Phabuilder chair Sherry Xu, the newly launched PHA straws can endure temperatures exceeding 90°C, thereby meeting the need for eco-friendly hot beverage solutions.
Xu said: “As society becomes more attuned to environmental concerns, there's a clear trend towards responsible and sustainable alternatives.
“Our PHA-based offerings, developed via a low-carbon, chemical-free approach, respond to this demand. They seamlessly connect consumer choices with environmental responsibilities.”
Phabuilder has received certifications from environmental organisations such as TÜV AUSTRIA, the Biodegradable Products Institute (BPI), and the European DIN, confirming the biodegradability and biocompostability of its products.
The company also revealed a new brand initiative focused on expanding PHA applications.
The initiative revolves around three key elements: PHAmily (exploring PHA polymers), PHAbrary (varied research), and PHAdustry (large-scale production of PHA in the industry).
Each component aims to explore and use more than 150 PHA monomers to uncover a wide range of applications, spanning from everyday essentials to medical and high-end products.
