The ISCC PLUS certification further enables Polytex to augment the utilisation of post-consumer recycled material.

Five Star Holding, a pioneer in sustainable packaging solutions, announced that its subsidiary, Polytex Fibers, has attained the International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC) PLUS certification at its state-of-the-art Houston facility in the US.

Elevating sustainable packaging standards

Polytex, renowned for innovative, flexible packaging products incorporating post-consumer resins and mono-material structures, leverages Five Star's in-house post-consumer resin processing.

This, combined with vertically integrated film and fabric extrusion capabilities, positions Polytex as an industry leader with unprecedented levels of Post-Consumer Recycled (PCR) content.

Ensuring global sustainability

The ISCC PLUS certification, a globally recognised sustainability accreditation, plays a pivotal role in establishing the traceability of recycled materials across the supply chain.

By adhering to stringent sustainability criteria, this certification not only bolsters consumer confidence but also significantly diminishes environmental impact.

In a statement, Five Star technical director, sustainability Milagro Marroquin said: "Polytex's ISCC PLUS certification marks a significant milestone in our pursuit of a circular economy. This certification empowers Polytex to align with our customers' sustainability objectives, offering flexible packaging solutions with certified advanced recycling materials."

Advancing recycling practices

Polytex, championing 100% recyclable material structures, manufactures packages such as pouches for snacks and pet treats, as well as laminated woven sacks for pet food.

These can be collected and recycled within existing infrastructures, including at Fresh Pak, Five Star's recycling operation in Houston, Texas.

The ISCC PLUS certification further enables Polytex to augment the utilisation of post-consumer recycled material.

Vice-president of marketing and sustainability Tonya Pullen emphasised: “Our adoption of the ISCC PLUS certification system is a testament to our commitment to sustainability and responsible sourcing.”

Pullen added: "By implementing rigorous traceability and sustainability standards, we are proud to offer our customers and partners the assurance they need when it comes to using high levels of recycled materials in their products.”

Global food packaging industry witnessing an uptick in demand for personalized packaging

In 2022, flexible packaging was the most used pack material, followed by rigid plastics. The demand for eco-friendly packaging is on the rise, stimulated by consumers’ increasing focus on sustainability. Personalized packaging is becoming popular as consumers appreciate products tailored to their needs or preferences. In the food packaging industry, personalization can be done to amplify brand appeal in form of personalized bags, stickers, or boxes.
