Primetals Technologies and LanzaTech renew green steel partnership

The ten-year partnership aims to accelerate LanzaTech’s commercial carbon recycling technology for the green iron and steel industry.

Metallurgical plant solutions provider Primetals Technologies and carbon capture company LanzaTech have renewed their ten-year agreement to accelerate green solutions for the global steel industry.

Under the previous agreement, the companies worked together on process integration and transforming steel emissions into commodity chemicals.

The new agreement will see Primetals Technologies and LanzaTech enable more projects in the iron and steel sector to adopt LanzaTech’s carbon recycling technologies.

The companies have already collaborated with steel company ArcelorMittal to use LanzaTech’s technology at its steel mill in Belgium. The project will convert the emissions from steel manufacturing into 80m litres of ethanol which will reportedly reduce carbon emissions by 125,000t.

Funding for this project was obtained from the Flemish and Belgian governments, the European Investment Bank and the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme.

LanzaTech CEO Dr Jennifer Holmgren commented: “There is no single pathway for the steel industry to reduce its emissions, but a range of solutions can play a significant part in meeting national, regional and even corporate net zero goals.”

Primetals Technologies head of green steel Dr Alexander Fleischanderl added: “The steel sector’s goal to achieve net-zero by 2050 depends upon breakthrough CCU technologies as they evolve.”

The recyclability of steel continues to evolve in the industry, as Tata Steel recently entered into a strategic partnership with the UK’s Local Authority Recycling Advisory Committee (Larac) to spread awareness about how to recycle steel packaging properly.
