Flexible packaging and material science company ProAmpac has presented its ProActive PCR retort pouches, a sustainable alternative to conventional retort options.

ProActive PCR Retort pouches are designed to reduce virgin plastics usage and contain up to 30% post-consumer recycled (PCR) material by mass.

The new solutions are part of ProAmpac’s ProActive Sustainability platform, which is designed to help brands and retailers in achieving their circular economy goals.

ProActive PCR Retort pouches are specifically designed for products such as shelf-stable ready-to-eat proteins, which demand ultra-high barrier and high-heat resistance.

The company’s proprietary techniques enable the packaging to maintain functionality and durability, without compromising food safety during the retort and distribution processes. They also offer striking graphics to improve shelf presence.

ProAmpac food and beverage market manager Charles Golub said: "At ProAmpac, we understand the importance of sustainability to our customers. ProActive PCR Retort pouches use less virgin resin than conventional pouches.

"By reducing the environmental impact of our packaging, we are empowering our customers to make sustainable choices aligned with their goals. Together, we're forging a path towards a more sustainable approach to packaging.”

According to ProAmpac North America Product Development senior director Bob Flaherty, ProActive PCR Retort pouches also deliver superior filling line efficiencies, mechanical performance, and food shelf life.

Flaherty said: “Offering superior barrier protection throughout the retort process preserves freshness, and these pouches provide excellent tear performance for an enhanced consumer experience. Their resistance to flex cracking ensures optimal product protection.”

In September this year, ProAmpac unveiled its new patent-pending ProActive Recyclable Paper 1000 High Barrier packaging solution, suitable for flavoured oatmeal, dry food products, dehydrated fruit, and confectionery.
