The partnership will see the leveraging of Ranpak's Netherlands-based R&D centre.

European packaging distributor RAJA has partnered with Ranpak, a US-headquartered paper-based packaging company, to develop sustainable cushioning packaging solutions.

This collaboration aims to meet the increasing demand for eco-friendly packaging alternatives within the e-commerce and industrial supply chains, providing protection against shocks and temperature changes during transit.

Under the new commercial agreement, the two partners will leverage Ranpak's research and development (R&D) centre in the Netherlands and insights from RAJA's customer base.

The partnership will also focus on marketing novel packaging solutions for temperature-sensitive goods, including the RecyCold Climaliner insulated packaging.

To support this initiative, RAJA plans to recruit 20 additional specialists to guide customers on the application of paper-based protection and cushioning packaging.

This move is also in response to the EU's mandate for 100% recyclable packaging by 2030.

RAJA Packaging and Industrial Equipment managing director Catherine Cambier said: “The agreement with Ranpak will enable RAJA to develop a unique expertise in paper-based cushioning packaging solutions in Europe.

“Companies are increasingly turning to easily recyclable packaging, but every customer is different and has unique needs. Some are looking for automated solutions and others are not. We aim to provide the same level of service, quality and technical expertise to every customer throughout Europe.”

The partnership between RAJA and Ranpak builds on a longstanding relationship that dates back to the 1980s when RAJA first introduced Ranpak's packaging systems to the European market.

Since then, RAJA has sold and installed thousands of these systems across 17 European countries.

Established in 1972, Ranpak provides environmentally sustainable packaging, cold chain, and automation solutions.

The company claims all its paper packaging materials to be renewable, biodegradable, and recyclable at the kerb, with most of its business conducted in the US and Europe.
