US-based Revolution Sustainable Solutions has acquired Island Plastics, a domestic producer of 100% post-consumer recycled (PCR) linear low-density polyethylene (LLDPE) film-grade resin, for an undisclosed sum.

The acquisition is expected to expand Revolution's recycling capabilities, particularly in the production of clear food-grade PCR for flexible food packaging and other applications.

Island Plastics, located in Flint, Michigan, operates a mechanical recycling facility, which is claimed to be the largest film recycling plant in Michigan, contributing to the advancement of plastic recycling technologies.

The company's expertise is expected to complement Revolution's aim to develop sustainable loop solutions that benefit the environment.

The acquisition will improve Revolution's ability to offer sustainable products to diverse markets, including agriculture, facilities maintenance, and consumer goods.

In October 2023, Revolution received a letter of no objection from the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for its innovative mechanical recycling process.

The company's method enables the production of PCR LLDPE resin from stretch film.

With the integration of Island Plastics, Revolution expects to recover, process, and clean more than 300 million pounds (mlb) of material annually.

Revolution president and CEO Scott Coleman said: “The partnership represents a significant step forward in our mission to redefine possible for sustainable plastic solutions.

“By integrating Island Plastics' recycling capabilities and high-quality PCR products, we are poised to enhance our sustainable ecosystem and further contribute to a circular economy.

“We plan to leverage our recent FDA no objection letter to expand Island Plastics' PCR offerings to include clear food-grade PCR.”

In January this year, Revolution acquired PolyAg Recycling, a Canadian recycler of agricultural films.
