The solution will mark the debut of Woamy's packaging foam in the market.

Secto Design has collaborated with wood-based products manufacturer Paptic and plastic-free biofoam producer Woamy to transition to biobased and recyclable materials for its products' packaging.

A Finland-based company, Secto manufactures handmade wooden design lamps.

Under this new partnership, Secto is transitioning to packaging made from recyclable materials to replace the conventional fossil-based packaging used for its ‘Petite’ product range.

The traditional plastic hoods used for this product line will be replaced with Paptic’s renewable at-scale material.

The new recyclable packaging solution is expected to roll out in February 2024.

According to Paptic, its at-scale materials are designed to offer distinctive tactile properties and strength in order to replace plastics in flexible packaging.

The use of this wood-fibre-based material will help consumers recycle the entirety of the product's packaging in a single recycling stream.

Paptic CSO and co-founder Esa Torniainen said: “Our materials’ unique qualities, such as flexibility and softness, perform exceptionally well in this packaging, where a non-scratch surface is also essential.”.

In place of plastic foams meanwhile, used as protective packaging for Petite products, Secto will use Woamy’s biobased, biodegradable, and recyclable wood foam.

This foam is mainly used to ensure that the metal parts of Petite-branded floor and table lamps are protected from any scratches and damage during transportation.

Woamy CEO and co-founder Susanna Partanen said: “In the new sustainable lamp packaging, the items inside stay flawless and it is easy for a consumer to recycle the entire packaging after use.

“This is a very exciting moment for Woamy to launch our first packaging foam product to the market.”

Once rolled out, the redesigned packaging will help Secto in maintaining a circular economy system in the supply chain.

Secto part owner and board member Joakim Jusélius said: “To me, this is another tangible step in our ambitious sustainability efforts, to act in accordance with our values.”

In September 2023, Paptic announced securing €23m ($25m) in investment to speed up the development of its packaging materials.

Non-Alcoholic Beverages Packaging Industry Dynamics

In 2022, the soft drinks sector held the largest non-alcoholic beverages packaging market share, while the hot drinks sector is forecasted to register the fastest growth during 2022–27.
