Switzerland-based packaging solutions provider SIG has started the construction of its first aseptic carton plant in Ahmedabad, a city in Gujarat, India.

According to SIG’s LinkedIn post, this will be its tenth aseptic carton facility globally.

The new milestone was marked by a ground-breaking ceremony held yesterday (28 September).

SIG’s new factory is being set up in collaboration with Horizon Industrial Parks, an Indian company that provides industrial and warehousing solutions.

The fully built-to-suit plant is being set up within Horizon's Grade A environs, Horizon added in a LinkedIn post.

The plant is expected to be fully operational by 2025.

The Swiss company said it is investing €60m in the first phase of the plant’s development.

Once constructed, the facility will support the production of up to four billion aseptic carton packs every year.

With additional investments in future, the capacity could be expanded to ten billion packs annually.

These investments will further help SIG to equip the plant with the latest technologies while meeting all the necessary safety, environmental, and quality standards.

The factory will be established to the same design and scale as that of SIG’s other facilities in Suzhou, China, and Querétaro, Mexico.

A Business Standard report quoted SIG CEO Samuel Sigrist as saying: “By building this plant, we are reaffirming our commitment to this thriving market, where we've seen tremendous demand for our high-quality products and services.”

Earlier in April this year, SIG announced the opening of its second facility in Palghar, Maharashtra, India, dedicated for bag-in-box and spouted pouch packaging.
