Silly Nice and Sana introduce American-made packaging to evade Chinese tariff

Silly Nice has transitioned to recycled lids and jars and boxes comprising renewable hemp.

Silly Nice, an independent cannabis brand, has formed an alliance with Sana Packaging, a packaging company, to drive profitability while improving sustainability.

This collaboration is a strategic response to the escalating tariffs and supply chain challenges that have been impacting the US' legal cannabis market.

By partnering with Sana Packaging, Silly Nice has transitioned from relying on international vendors to using recycled ocean-bound plastic for its lids, 100% recycled glass jars, and boxes crafted from renewable hemp.

This eco-conscious move has led to the repurposing of approximately 694lb of plastic that was once destined for the ocean.

Silly Nice co-founder LeVar Thomas said: “Sustainability isn’t just a buzzword - it’s a responsibility. We knew we had to find a solution that didn’t just respond to the tariffs - but moved us forward in a better direction. Ron and the Sana team have been instrumental in making that possible.”

In addition to its environmental benefits, the switch to a local supplier is economical for Silly Nice.

The company will benefit from consistent pricing and reduced lead times while avoiding the complications of international shipping, resulting in enhanced order fulfilment and less inventory pressure.

Sana Packaging, founded by Ron Basak-Smith, provides American-made packaging options that reduce waste and circumvent the unpredictability of international freight costs.

Basak-Smith said: "They [Silly Nice] didn't just adapt to survive - they advanced to a higher level. They recognised tariffs as an opportunity for smarter business practices. Our collaborative efforts demonstrate that environmental responsibility and financial success can coexist."

In February 2024, Sana Packaging unveiled a preroll multipack made from reclaimed ocean-bound plastic.

Featuring a child-resistant clamshell closure, this multipack can hold up to five 85mm prerolls, ranging from 0.5g to 1g each.
