Packaging industry leader Smurfit Kappa has clinched an impressive 12 WorldStar awards, surpassing all competition in this year's prestigious global packaging accolades.

This noteworthy achievement underscores Smurfit Kappa's steadfast dedication to crafting innovative, creative, and sustainable solutions for its clientele.

Innovative solutions

Distinguishing themselves among the winning entries were standout creations such as an octagonal cake box, a transportation pack designed for electric scooters, and a visually striking point-of-sale display for sardines.

Notably, Smurfit Kappa's prowess extended into the e-commerce category, where a pack for plants caught the judges' attention for its ability to keep soil and pot separate, preventing spillage and ensuring intact delivery.

Each of Smurfit Kappa's triumphant submissions highlighted the company's unwavering commitment to sustainability.

One example is a 100% paper-based reel for engineering components, replacing plastic and metal counterparts and resulting in the elimination of 35 tonnes of plastic annually.

Additionally, in the company's Household category, a solution for PPG paint replaced plastic jerry cans with a 'Bag-in-Box' alternative, leading to an 80% reduction in plastic usage.

Celebrating creativity and problem-solving

Arco Berkenbosch, CIO at Smurfit Kappa, expressed delight at the company's success, emphasising the role of its extensive design collection.

“We are thrilled to have come out top at these highly respected and global awards. Over the years, we have built up a collection of over 8,000 designs on our Innobook tool which our design teams can draw on for inspiration. This has really helped to foster a culture of creativity and raise the bar internally.”

Smurfit Kappa's dominance at the WorldStar Awards not only showcases its innovative prowess but also solidifies its commitment to sustainable packaging solutions, setting a high bar for industry standards.

Non-Alcoholic Beverages Packaging Industry Dynamics

In 2022, the soft drinks sector held the largest non-alcoholic beverages packaging market share, while the hot drinks sector is forecasted to register the fastest growth during 2022–27. Rigid plastics are usually a preferred choice in the non-alcoholic beverages industry because of their portability, convenience, and lightweight nature that facilitate on-the-go consumption.
