Speira invests in advanced aluminium slag press at Karmøy facility

The new slag press holds double the capacity of the current equipment at the plant.

Speira, a rolling and recycling company, has invested in an advanced slag press at its Karmøy facility in Norway.

The Nkr6m ($0.568m) investment is set to improve the recycling of waste from aluminium production.

The new equipment is expected to arrive in early 2025.

Speira Karmøy plant manager Pål Tage Endresen said: "Not only will the quality of the product be higher, but we will reduce both operating costs and waste from production."

The slag press machine cools and compresses the aluminium melt under high pressure, a process that takes approximately 30 minutes, resulting in recycled aluminium.

Recycling and treatment of aluminium slag is part of Speira’s strategy to improve its sustainability.

Endresen added: "We have a stated goal of setting the standard for sustainability in our industry. It is all about being strongly connected to the community in which we work and live, and aware of the role we can play in ensuring a sustainable future."

The slag press is part of Speira's broader investment strategy in Karmøy, which has seen more than Nkr100m in new investments since Speira was established following a spin-off from Hydro in 2021.

These investments have allowed Speira to acquire superior equipment, including a new grinding machine and upgrades to several production lines.

"Investing in new equipment is very important for Speira to be competitive in the future. The new slag press, which has already been placed on order, has twice the capacity of today's equipment, and will help consolidate our position as a leading player for rolled and recycled aluminium products," concluded Endresen.
