STADLER installs MSW and packaging sorting plant in Spain

This sorting plant has an input capacity of processing 40t MSW and 4t light packaging per hour.

STADLER Anlagenbau’s subsidiary STADLER Selecciona has announced the opening of a Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) and packaging sorting plant at Torija centre in Guadalajara, Spain.

STADLER was responsible for installing the MSW and sorting plant.

The plant has been established as part of the Consortium for Management of Urban Waste of the province of Guadalajara, covering a territory of 288 municipalities and 21 associations of municipalities.

The Torija waste treatment centre, which is managed by recycling centre UTE RSU Guadalajara, manages the entire province and receives waste from transfer stations from 22 municipalities.

Currently, Torija centre has a sorting plant, a composting plant, leachate treatment and a landfill site.

Work associated with the establishment of the new sorting plant was carried out by Empresa de Transformación Agraria SA (TRAGSA), a Spanish public company.

STADLER International Sales director Carlos Manchado Atienza said: “The high-quality work of our engineers ensured successful installation within existing building.

“Also, excellent communication with the different suppliers involved was key to keeping project on schedule and delivering on all project requirements.”

STADLER’s sorting plant has an input capacity of processing 40 tonnes (t) of MSW and 4t of light packaging per hour.

The sorting process involves the use of trommels and an STT 5000 ballistic separator for sorting household waste, mixed commercial waste and bulky waste.

The plant has three optical sorters for polyethylene terephthalate (PET), high-density polyethylene (HDPE), PLASTIC MIX (PS, PP and other plastics such as PVC) and BRIKS (cardboard packaging for liquid beverages).

It also has separate sorters for iron and aluminium.

After sorting, the collected material is sold in the market.

STADLER said that the automation of the entire process, using ballistic separator and optical sorters, has significantly improved the recovery rates.

The plant’s capacity has been increased to over 100,000t per year of MSW and 12,000t annually for light packaging material.

TRAGSA Group Guadalajara Territorial Unit 4 managing director Antonio Marzal said: “In this project, it was very important for start-up of plant to take place on a specific date, and STADLER made it happen.”

The packaging volume in the global household products industry was 199 billion units in 2022, and is expected to grow at a CAGR of >3% by 2027, per GlobalData. Flexible packaging was the most used pack material in 2022 accounting for a share of 68.6%, followed by rigid plastics. Flexible packaging offers ease of use and storage, allowing customers to access and store household and pet care products conveniently. Its lightweight nature reduces transportation costs and increases efficiency throughout the supply chain.
