Austrian machinery supplier Starlinger has announced that it is providing a new polyethylene terephthalate (PET) recycling line to Vietnam-based plastic recycler DUYTAN Plastic Recycling.
DUYTAN is claimed to be Vietnam’s first recycling company to perform PET bottle-to-bottle recycling.
The company produces recycled PET (rPET), which can be reused by various industries such as including fast-moving consumer goods companies.
The new recycling line is referred to as 'recoSTAR PET 330 HC iV+' and is being installed to boost the existing production capacity of DUYTAN.
The production line will increase the business' capacity to reprocess up to 60,000 tonnes (t) of plastics annually. This amount of plastic is equivalent to four billion post-consumer plastic bottles.
Starlinger’s recoSTAR line requires low investment costs and low operational expenses and uses an underwater pelletising system, making it more energy efficient.
In comparison to strand pelletisers, an underwater system operates on less energy, especially when used together with a downstream SSP process.
The line is planned to be installed in the third quarter of the current year and is expected to become operational by the end of the year.
DUYTAN's sustainability director Lê Anh said: “We want to promote a closed loop for plastic bottles in order to reduce plastic waste and the use of fossil resources in our country.
“Therefore, in order to produce food-grade recycled PET for the production of high-quality PET bottle preforms, DUYTAN Plastic Recycling decided to choose recycling lines supplied by the leading PET bottle-to-bottle recycling machine manufacturer in Austria, Starlinger.”
This will be DUYTAN’s third Starlinger-provided PET bottle-to-bottle recycling line.
The first two PET recycling lines have been operational since 2021 and currently have an annual production capacity of 30,000t of rPET pellets.
In order to maintain a continuous supply of input materials, the recycler has developed a network of more than 100 stations in Vietnam for collecting plastic waste.
Last year, one of DUYTAN’s facilities recycled approximately 1.3 billion domestically collected plastic bottles.
