Fresh produce packaging manufacturer StePacPPC has introduced a sustainable packaging solution that extends the shelf life of exotic mushrooms.

For the new packaging, the company customised its modified atmosphere packaging films to preserve the freshness of the product.

It is suitable for both whole and sliced white mushrooms, as well as a variety of exotic mushrooms such as oyster, shiitake lion's mane, and portabella.

StePacPPC’s films are engineered with a high water-vapour transmission rate and tailored modified atmosphere properties.

These features are crucial for maintaining the quality of mushrooms, which are known for their high metabolic activity and respiration rates.

The packaging slows the ageing process, reduces dehydration, and expels excess moisture.

In addition to extending the product's shelf life, the new packaging formats effectively diminish waste and associated costs by preserving texture, nutrition, and flavour.

StePacPPC CTO Gary Ward said: “Mushrooms have high metabolic activity and respiration rates which gives them a short shelf life, typically just a few days.

“They also generate a lot of moisture during the respiration process, which encourages bacterial decay. On the other hand, they are also prone to dehydration which causes them to shrivel, and they become discoloured due to oxidation. Sliced mushrooms are even more susceptible to a rapid decline in quality."

Alongside its partner Windham Packaging, the company recently concluded the adaptation of its Xflow brand of roll-stock films for automated packing to meet the requirement for bulk fresh sliced white mushrooms.
