Stora Enso, a leading global provider of renewable solutions for packaging, paper, and biomaterials, has announced a strategic partnership with Enkei, a Swedish design startup committed to creating sustainable products.
Together, the two companies are developing innovative packaging solutions that prioritise both environmental sustainability and product protection.
Enkei's handcrafted designer table lamp, Reminder (001), presented a unique challenge in terms of packaging.
The lamp, made from discarded materials, required a solution that could safeguard its delicate design without compromising sustainability or aesthetics.
Stora Enso's Papira foam, a biobased and biodegradable material made from wood fibres, proved to be the ideal choice.
Papira offers shock-absorbing qualities, ensuring the safe transport of the Reminder lamp.
Its use in combination with corrugated board, also provided by Stora Enso, created a robust and sustainable packaging solution.
This collaboration not only protected the lamp but also aligned with Enkei's commitment to reducing its environmental footprint.
“We have extremely high requirements when it comes to sustainability. At the same time, we strive to make the sustainable alternative attractive, and that is why high-quality design is so important to us," said Lovisa Sunnerholm, CEO at Enkei.
"We wanted to find a packaging solution that safely protected the lamp, was aesthetically pleasing, and left a low climate footprint."
“The 5kg Reminder lamp, made of, for example, fashion waste and a bottom of sustainable concrete, was an exciting packaging design challenge," said Paula Martirez, business development manager at Stora Enso.
"This is a perfect example of how Papira can provide sustainable cushioning for fragile and heavy items without adding excessive weight and volume to the packaging, all while eliminating plastic."
The collaboration between Stora Enso and Enkei showcases the potential for innovative partnerships to drive sustainable practices within the packaging industry.
