German plastic film manufacturer SÜDPACK has developed a new flexible film that is designed to offer superior thermoforming properties.

Dubbed Multifol Extreme, the film is suitable for packaging fatty, protein-rich, or sharp-edged products such as salmon fillets, herring portions, and white fish.

The film’s sealing performance is claimed to offer production reliability and high package quality with a low degree of leakage, even if the sealing surfaces are contaminated.

Multifol Extreme also weighs 20% less than its predecessors and approximately 30% less than conventional polyamide/polyethylene structures.

The company said that the Multifol Extreme film, with just 150µm thickness, can replace 200µm conventional thermoforming films and offer high product protection.

According to the company, the combination of a Multifol Extreme base film with a lidding film, belonging to the same product family, could offer further material savings to manufacturers.

SÜDPACK explained that the film’s lightweight nature will offer additional ecological and economic benefits as it will reduce storage and transport costs, as well as lessen downtime on all common thermoforming packaging machines.

The puncture resistance feature also meets the long shelf life required by these foods.

SÜDPACK stated that the film’s material efficiency has the potential to lower an organisation’s fossil feedstock consumption and thereby reduce its carbon footprint.

Besides fresh products, the film is also suitable for extreme-temperature applications such as frozen foods.

Last month, SÜDPACK announced a developmental partnership with SN Maschinenbau to produce a new concept for recyclable spout pouches
