Südpack and SN Maschinenbau enter developmental partnership

The concept developed via the partnership will be launched during the upcoming Prod&Pack trade fair.

Südpack, a manufacturer of high-performance films for packaging, has announced a developmental partnership with SN Maschinenbau to produce a new concept for recyclable spout pouches.

The development of this concept is projected to help food producers and fillers of thick and thin fluid products, including fruit purees and smoothies, among other liquids.

The food manufacturers can use this concept to produce spout pouches in-house and then fill and seal them via their existing filling machines.

These recyclable stand-up pouches will serve as a sustainable and economical alternative to premade spout pouches.

For this packaging concept, Südpack will provide its polypropylene (PP)-based Pure-Line films solution while SN Maschinenbau will provide its SPM 50 horizontal pouch-making machine.

SPM 50 can manufacture up to 4,200 pouches per hour and can achieve production of more than 30,000 spout pouches in every eight-hour shift with just one film reel.

Südpack product manager Lutz Neugebauer said: “Our concept is based on a user-friendly pouch-making machine combined with films and spouts that are perfectly coordinated, which means they can be reliably processed.

“The film can be processed from reel, which provides many advantages in terms of efficiency and economic profitability without having to make compromises when it comes to quality. This makes the concept an economically attractive overall solution for all production quantities.”

The Pure-Line film is a recyclable monomaterial. This usage of PP components in the packaging is hoped to offer simple handling of the product and maximise its reliability.

Maschinenbau Global Sales director Thomas Fuest said: “The factors mentioned above make investing in this pouch concept highly viable in economic terms.

“In combination with substantially improved ergonomics for spout and rail handling and a high level of flexibility regarding different pouch and spout designs, SPM 50 is an excellent investment that can also enhance your own value creation.”

The new concept will be launched during the international trade fair Prod&Pack, which is scheduled to be held between 21 and 23 November in Lyon, France.

Analyzing the dynamics of the metaverse in the packaging sector

Many of the vital metaverse technologies are already being used or piloted by packaging companies, who have brought together AI, AR, VR, cloud, the IoT, and other technologies to monitor and maintain key assets remotely. The sector could also use immersive metaverse solutions to optimize packaging design and quality control—testing prototypes in a virtual world before bringing them to market. Another disruptive benefit of the metaverse will be using underlying blockchain and digital twin technologies to assist in creating more transparent and traceable supply chains.
