TekniPlex Healthcare, a leading provider of advanced healthcare solutions, has announced the launch of its new bio-based medical-grade polyvinyl chloride (PVC) compounds.

The compounds are the first of their kind to offer equivalent performance and compositional properties to conventional PVC resins while utilising renewable resources.

Certified under the ISCC PLUS system, the bio-based compounds are manufactured using resins and plasticisers derived from renewable sources, contributing to a reduction in carbon emissions.

The compounds maintain the same chemical composition, functionality and regulatory compliance as traditional medical-grade PVC, ensuring seamless integration into existing applications.

As the healthcare industry increasingly focuses on sustainability and environmental responsibility, TekniPlex Healthcare’s bio-based compounds offer a solution.

The compounds can be used as a direct replacement for a wide range of injection moulded or extruded PVC products, including tubing, films and components.

By adopting bio-based compounds, healthcare manufacturers can reduce their carbon footprint by up to 90% compared to conventional PVC resins and approximately 60% compared to traditional PVC plasticisers.

This reduction in emissions can contribute to a more sustainable healthcare supply chain.

TekniPlex Healthcare’s bio-based PVC compounds are produced at its manufacturing facility in Belfast, Northern Ireland and are backed by ISCC PLUS certification, ensuring transparency and traceability throughout the supply chain.

“The ability to produce a broad array of medical-grade PVC solutions with bio-based compounds is a significant step forward in healthcare materials science sustainability,” said Meg Henke, global head of product management for TekniPlex Healthcare.

“We’re proud to be the first to introduce such a groundbreaking capabilities set, which brings the potential to substantially reduce our customers’ overall CO₂ output while staying unwaveringly true to our top priority of delivering better patient outcomes.”
