Tetra Pak unveils framework to combat nature loss and enhance water security

The new strategy encompasses the company's entire business ecosystem.

Tetra Pak, a leading food processing and packaging solutions company, has launched its ‘Approach to Nature’ framework.

This comprehensive plan outlines the company's commitment to halting and reversing nature loss while enhancing global water security.

The initiative aligns with global environmental targets, including the UN's Biodiversity Plan, which calls for halting biodiversity loss and restoring ecosystems.

A report by the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services highlights the alarming deterioration of nature due to human activity, with food systems identified as the primary driver.

These disruptions threaten economies, livelihoods, and global food security.

Tetra Pak's new framework aims to manage the company's value chain impact on nature and actively support ecosystem restoration.

Additionally, it seeks to contribute to global water security by reducing negative impacts on local water resources and addressing shared water challenges in vulnerable areas.

This strategy encompasses Tetra Pak's entire business ecosystem, including its suppliers and customers across all operational geographies.

Tetra Pak has established 25 specific targets as part of the framework. Some key examples include:

  • Sustainable sourcing: By 2025, 100% of Tetra Pak's raw materials with the highest environmental footprint will be sourced from certified or controlled sources.
  • Water stewardship: By 2025, all Tetra Pak suppliers with significant water usage will be required to report on their water use and quality.
  • Waste reduction: Achieving zero-waste-to-landfill status at all Tetra Pak production sites by 2030.
  • Water efficiency: A 50% reduction in water usage on Tetra Pak's best-practice processing lines by 2030 compared to 2019.

Tetra Pak's commitment extends beyond its own operations.

The company is a signatory of the Business for Nature coalition's Conference of the Parties 15 (COP15) statement, urging governments to adopt ambitious biodiversity targets.

By setting a clear roadmap with measurable targets, Tetra Pak aims to inspire collaboration throughout the industry to protect and restore nature for future generations.
