TIPA, a provider of compostable packaging solutions, has partnered with Fresh-Lock, a reclosable flexible packaging technology brand, to promote the adoption of home compostable packaging.

The collaboration has introduced a new range of home compostable closures for pouches, including Style 8531, featuring child-resistant technology, and Style 8035, a single-lock design for diverse applications.

Made from TIPA's home compostable resin formulation, these closures are aimed at various markets, including nutraceuticals, food, and personal care.

Fresh-Lock Presto Specialty VP Lisa Petersmark said: "TIPA's expertise in compostable materials combined with Fresh-Lock's market position and reputation as a high-quality, reliable, innovator in sustainable reclosable solutions creates an unparalleled combination to expand the compostable packaging market."

According to the companies, this collaboration represents a significant step for consumers and businesses seeking sustainable packaging solutions to address plastic pollution.

Flexible packaging is known for its sustainability benefits, but recycling challenges persist as most kerbside recycling programmes do not support traditional plastic films.

The new home compostable technology is aimed at addressing this challenge as it offers the benefits of flexible packaging with the added advantage of closing the circularity gap.

TIPA provides fully compostable substitutes for traditional plastic packaging, which contributes to reducing the reliance on traditional plastics.

At the end of their life cycle, TIPA's packaging solutions can be composted to biodegrade into nutrient-rich soil within months and are compatible with existing packaging production machinery.

TIPA North America vice-president and general manager Rodrigo Castaneda said: "We are thrilled to count the Fresh-Lock team among the innovative market leaders we work with, expanding the commercial availability of compostable packaging options in North America.

"This is a significant step to help consumers and businesses actively contribute to kerbing the reliance on conventional flexible plastics and navigate quickly-changing policies on packaging waste management for the benefit of the planet."

TIPA and Fresh-Lock will present their compostable packaging solutions at the 2024 Pack Expo in Chicago, US, from 3-6 November.

In September last year, TIPA partnered with speciality film manufacturer Charter Next Generation to drive local US production and adoption of compostable packaging.
