Toufayan Bakeries, a family-owned bakery in the US, has launched new sustainable packaging for its pita bread and other baked goods.
The updated packaging is claimed to be 100% recyclable and comes with a resealable zipper closure.
This eliminates the need for a plastic clip and inner cellophane wrap while offering a sleeker package both on the shelf and at home.
The change is anticipated to cut the company's plastic consumption by more than 40 tons (t) annually.
The packaging revamp aligns with Toufayan's ongoing commitment to environmental sustainability, including responsible sourcing, waste reduction across manufacturing sites, and carbon reduction initiatives.
The removal of inner liners and the introduction of zip-top packaging will be implemented across nearly all items the bakery produces.
The solution aims to provide consumers with an improved product experience by maintaining the freshness and flavour of Toufayan's offerings more effectively.
The rollout of the packaging will commence this month across the US.
Toufayan Bakeries Marketing and Sales vice-president Karen Toufayan said: "This is the pita our grandfather perfected, that we proudly share with families nationwide. We take great care in how it is packaged from our bakery to your home.
"Upgrading our entire product line to best-in-class sustainable packaging reflects our commitment as a family-owned business that cares deeply about future generations. It was essential that sustainability improvements would also enhance the customer experience while maintaining pricing, so families who are relying on Toufayan can continue to do so with confidence and joy."
