Food delivery service provider Uber Eats and its partner DeliverZero have expanded reusable packaging pilots to the West Coast of the US.

The trial allows customers to opt for reusable containers when ordering from participating restaurants through the Uber Eats platform.

The expansion targets more than 130 restaurants in the greater Los Angeles (LA) and San Francisco regions.

As of 29 March 2024, 20 LA restaurant partners on Uber Eats have signed on with DeliverZero.

The account management teams of Uber Eats are also assisting interested restaurants in LA and across the country to experience reusables every day through incentives and more.

To use the service, users can search for 'DeliverZero' or look for the dedicated banner to find participating restaurants and add 'Use DeliverZero containers, please' before checkout.

Customers can return the packaging to the original restaurant or to any participating restaurant or schedule a pick up by a DeliverZero partnered courier.

A nominal charge of approximately $1.00 is applied for the use of reusable packaging.

Since launching the pilot last year in New York City, the initiative has prevented more than 11,000 single-use containers from ending up in landfills.

DeliverZero estimates it has saved around 1,810kg of greenhouse gas emissions and nearly 6,000 gallons of water.

In addition to the US, Uber Eats is actively promoting reusable packaging solutions across various countries, including France, Switzerland, Germany, and the UK.

In June last year, Uber Eats pledged to eliminate plastic waste from its deliveries and transition to sustainable packaging by 2030.
