The non-alcoholic beverages bottling plant is the company’s seventh plant in Colombia. It was constructed with an investment of more than $250m and reinforces the company’s commitment to contribute to the region’s economic and social development. It also aids in boosting job creation in the region by hiring at least 60% of Colombians.
It created 800 new jobs during the construction period and will further generate 450 direct and indirect jobs in the FEMSA industrial park.
Coca-Cola Tocancipa bottling plant details
Construction of the new bottling plant began in August 2013 and involved the implementation of German, Italian, Spanish, Argentinean, American, and Colombian technologies.
The new state-of-the-art facility used more than 110 innovations in civil engineering, control systems, management and technology.
The plant features advanced industrial architecture comprising an anti-fracture internal flooring and low-interference column system, as well as an advanced power supply structure and water reutilisation system.
With these features and cutting-edge design and technology, the plant will possess the highest standards of sustainability and LEED certification.
Furthermore, the plant was constructed with strict adherence to the guidelines of the national government in terms of generating formal, stable and fairly-remunerated employment, with respect to the environment, use of technology, and the development and well-being of communities.
Production at Coca-Cola FEMSA’s new bottling plant
Two large production lines installed in the plant produce 75 million unit cases a year during the first phase, while the second phase will add three medium-sized production lines with a total capacity of 55 million unit cases a year.
Sustainability of the new bottling plant
The new Coca-Cola bottling plant in the city of Luohe in Henan province was opened in October 2010. It is the company’s second largest production facility in China.
The new bottling plant focuses on water and energy-saving practices, including the implementation of methods to decrease the carbon footprint and encourage the use of sustainable packaging.
The company also invested $1m for the development of social and environmental programmes in the region.
FEMSA’s industrial park
The bottling plant is located at FEMSA’s industrial park, which is the first cluster of soft drink companies in Colombia, dedicated to the assembly of beverages.
The industrial park is spread across an area of approximately 27ha, accommodating industrial users of goods and services. A total of five companies are planned to operate in the park.
The cluster is designed to bring various activities of the production chain of soft drinks under one roof. A beverage production facility, which focuses on production and bottling activities, will be part of the cluster making it one of the biggest and most modern clusters in the region.
The plant, along with established production centres in the region, including Bogota, Medellin, Bucaramanga, Barranquilla, Cali and La Calera, enables the company to cater to the anticipated demand resulting from the implementation of new market development strategies.
