Dubbed PIVOTAL, the new polyethylene resin with PCR content offers a more sustainable material for use in the production of non-FDA applications.
According to Westlake, the sourcing and manufacturing of PIVOTAL follows thorough quality control so that the product offers customers properties similar to virgin resin.
It enables customers to incorporate up to 45% PCR without compromising the performance levels of their applications.
In addition, the one-pellet solution is claimed to be a sustainable alternative for both monolayer and multilayer film applications.
The solution received GreenCircle certification in October last year.
Westlake polyethylene vice-president Amy Moore said: “Achieving GreenCircle certification assures our customers that their PCR supply chain is truly 100% post-consumer sourced. This highlights our ongoing commitment to sustainability and transparency with our customers.”
The introduction of the PIVOTAL product line is part of the company’s ongoing sustainability effort.
The new solution will complement Westlake’s portfolio of more environmentally friendly products, including Westlake Vinnolit’s GreenVin lower-carbon PVC and Westlake Pipe & Fittings’ molecular-oriented PVC pipe.
Headquartered in Houston, Westlake pledged to reduce its scope 1 and scope 2 CO₂ equivalent emissions per ton of production by 20% by 2030, with 2016 as the baseline in 2022.
Earlier this year, the company announced five more sustainability goals on its website, with a focus on water, health and safety, community engagement, diversity and inclusion, and the circular economy.
The company is scheduled to release its 2022 sustainability report in October 2023.
