Crown Holdings, a major player in metal packaging, has earned the prestigious ASI Performance Standard certification for its beverage can facility in Tocancipá, Colombia.
This accomplishment marks a significant milestone as Crown becomes the first company in Colombia to receive this certification, demonstrating its commitment to responsible sourcing practices.
The achievement supports the Aluminium Stewardship Initiative’s (ASI) expansion into new regions in South America and encourages other manufacturers in the area to follow suit in validating their procurement processes.
Driving sustainability in the aluminium value chain
The ASI Performance Standard V2 (2017) serves as a comprehensive voluntary sustainability standard for the aluminium value chain.
Developed through extensive multi-stakeholder consultations, it defines environmental, social and governance principles and criteria aimed at addressing sustainability issues in the industry.
Crown’s Colombia plant underwent a rigorous third-party audit, validating its efforts not only in responsible procurement but also in employee training covering areas such as biodiversity, safety and human rights.
Commitment to global sustainability
Crown president of Colombia Juan Carlos Trujillo emphasised the company’s dedication to corporate stewardship and responsible sourcing. He stated: “Our latest ASI Performance Standard Certification in Colombia reflects our continued efforts to be diligent within our procurement not just within South America, but our global organisation.”
Crown’s commitment to sustainability is further demonstrated through its Twentyby30 program, which aims to achieve 100% supplier compliance with sourcing policies and engage with partners on sustainability topics.

A Global effort toward sustainability
Prior to achieving certification in Colombia, Crown had already been verified by ASI in 12 other locations worldwide, including Brazil, Mexico and Thailand. The company remains committed to driving ASI certification across its global network in Asia, Europe, and the Middle East.
This verification aligns with Crown’s specific Twentyby30 goals, focusing on the programme’s “never compromise” pillar and supporting its overarching vision to serve as a mindful industry partner.
ASI, a global non-profit standards and certification organisation, commended Crown for its dedication to sustainability and responsible practices. The independent audit of Crown’s Colombia facility was carried out by DNV Business Assurance Services UK.
