Total Petrochemicals, one of the world’s leading petrochemicals producers, brings together the petrochemicals activities of the Total Group: base chemicals and their related polymers (polyethylene, polypropylene and polystyrene). Our products serve numerous consumer and industrial markets, including the packaging, construction and car industries.
Total Petrochemicals has introduced the Total Ecosolutions programme for products which enhance energy efficiency and/or reduce environmental footprint. Total Ecosolutions products and services must deliver the performance required, while offering the added benefit in one or both of the following areas: consumption of energy, water and other resources, and reducing environmental impact.
Lumicene® polyethylene grades for transparent blown film production
Total Petrochemicals Lumicene® products, based on proprietary technology, are next-generation polyolefins that deliver improved performance. The Lumicene® polyethylene grades M 3410 EP, M 4707 EP and M 5510 EP are used to produce transparent blown film for packaging applications.
- The Total Ecosolutions advantage: the superior properties of these new grades mean that film manufacturers can use significantly less raw materials (around 20%) for an equivalent product, compared to the standard polyethylenes most widely used in today’s market
- Environmental performance: reductions in energy consumption, amount of raw materials, and greenhouse gas emissions
Polypropylene random copolymers for food and consumer goods packaging
Total Petrochemicals proposes a unique range of transparent polypropylene Lumicene® random copolymers, expanding the range of application of conventional PP and adding a new dimension to more traditional ones.
Polypropylene Lumicene® MR110MC2 (MFI, 110g/10min) random copolymer proposes to producers of rigid packaging to improve end product appearance whilst boosting productivity. Converters have also reported significant down-gauging of produced parts, reducing the environmental footprint of the packaging.
Polypropylene for fresh food packaging
PPH 4026 polypropylene is used to manufacture thermoformed trays for fresh food packaging. It can be used alone or as part of a multilayer structure.
- The Total Ecosolutions advantage: PPH 4026’s superior mechanical properties reduce the weight of trays by 15%, which means that manufacturers can use significantly less raw materials
- Environmental performance: reductions in energy consumption, amount of raw materials, and greenhouse gas emissions
HDPE ISBM – a breakthrough combination
With HDPE SB1359, dedicated to ISBM extrusion, Total confirms its leadership in servicing the bottle industry with competitive solutions. SB1359 has been tailored by its specific molecular design, to offer an easy processing on standard ISBM machines, allowing converters to reach a new and wide range of features for food applications, also but household and personal care segments.
When comparing to the EBM process, the HDPE bottles produced by the ISBM process show a clear increase of rigidity in combination with outstanding drop test resistance, allowing further down-gauging by more than 20%. Total Petrochemicals also proposes a complete range of PP for ISBM extrusion.
Thinner shrink film with Lumicene® polyethylene
Total Petrochemicals Lumicene® polyethylene (mPE) grades, covering a wide range of density from low (mLLDPE), medium (mMDPE) to high (mHDPE) density, have a unique stiffness/optical properties balance offering the opportunity to significantly down-gauge shrink film. Total Petrochemicals Lumicene® M2704EP is used to manufacture transparent shrink film for packaging applications.
- The Total Ecosolutions advantage: the properties of these grades reduce the weight of films by around 27%, which results in significant material savings
- Environmental performance: the 27% reduction in material produces a corresponding reduction in energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions of around 1,800t of CO2 equivalvent for each 1,000t of M2704EP used
Cast film polypropylene random copolymers
Total Petrochemicals has extended its cast film polypropylene product range with a new reference on the market, PPR6298. This is a polypropylene random copolymer with enhanced sealing properties while maintaining excellent optical properties, very good processing, good drawability and gauge control, and low gel level. This means that PPR6298 can be used in the most critical applications.
Lumicene® polyethylene for superior gloss in consumer packaging
Total Petrochemicals has developed Lumicene® M3509 for extrusion blow moulding, based on proprietary technology. Lumicene® M3509 uniquely combines superior optical properties with the processing ease of conventional HDPE blow moulding resins.
Lumicene® M3509 can be used in pure, in blend or in coextrusion with conventional HDPE, reaching applications and features that traditional HDPE blow moulding grades could not target before. In particular, bottle applications such as personal care and household chemicals certainly benefit from the optical differentiation that Lumicene® M3509 has to offer.
Lighter injection-moulded caps with Lumicene® polyethylene
Total Petrochemicals Lumicene® M5220 and M5220M, dedicated to caps for carbonated drinks, have been awarded the Total Ecosolutions label. The cap weight reduction obtained with these grades leads to energy and material savings up to 15% compared with the most widely used standard PE.
In addition, the material savings will lead to a corresponding reduction in energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions.
