Aldi has introduced the UK’s reportedly first supermarket own-label wine bottle made from aluminium, offering a more sustainable packaging option.
The Costellore Pinot Grigio product, priced at £5.99 ($7.65) for a 75cl bottle, is set to be available on 14 April 2025.
This fully recyclable packaging launch aligns with Aldi’s ongoing efforts to reduce its environmental footprint.
Weighing just 95g, the aluminium bottle is significantly lighter than a typical glass wine bottle, making it easier to handle and transport and lowering carbon emissions.
Aldi UK chief commercial officer Julie Ashfield said: “Our buying teams are constantly exploring ways to offer greater value and greener choices for our customers.
“Shoppers are looking for ways to make a difference, and we’re proud to be leading the way with innovations like this aluminium wine bottle, building on our commitment to sustainable packaging.”
Aldi noted this wine offers citrus and orchard fruit flavours, which are claimed to have been sourced directly from Italy.
The company added that the wine is bottled in the UK at a facility powered by green energy sources.
Aldi teamed up with Broadland Drinks, a UK company committed to eco-friendly packaging for the drinks industry, to launch this initiative.
Broadland Drinks commercial director Catherine Smith said: “We’re delighted to partner with Aldi on the launch of the aluminium wine bottle.
“This initiative fits perfectly with our ambition to reduce our own carbon footprint and work with our retailers to make their businesses more sustainable.
“We know the biggest factor in a bottle of wine’s carbon footprint is the bottle itself, so by switching from glass to aluminium, we can help meet the rising demand for alternative lower carbon formats.”
Last month, Aldi revealed plans to reduce packaging waste by removing the cork sleeves from its own-brand wine bottles in the UK.
