DS Smith has partnered with Priméale, a division of Agrial, to develop an environmentally friendly substitute for plastic trays.

The partnership focuses on creating a recyclable fibre-based punnet for the Priméale Vegetable Kit range.

This initiative aims to replace plastic packaging with a more sustainable option in the fresh produce market.

The new punnets, crafted from corrugated cardboard, are designed to shield fresh produce during transit.

Featuring a transparent cellulose hydrate lid, the punnets allow for clear product visibility.

The design also includes a moisture-resistant barrier, ensuring the produce remains fresh and protected.

DS Smith sales, marketing, and innovation director Benjamin Chedal said: “This breakthrough is part of DS Smith’s overall strategy to support its customers in their transition to sustainable and circular packaging solutions while maintaining the essential functionalities of product protection and presentation for these fresh food products.”

The solution supports direct contact with moist food, enhancing its practicality.

The corrugated exterior also offers opportunities for branding, ensuring the contained products stand out at the point of sale.

Priméale (France) sales and marketing director Christophe Charvieux said: “We’re delighted to launch our new Vegetable Kit range. This product combines practicality and quality, while being packaged in a fully recyclable alternative to existing plastic trays.

“This new tray, which stands out for its strength, resistance, and transparency, is the result of the joint efforts of our Priméale teams and our supplier, DS Smith. We are convinced that this innovation will meet our consumers’ expectations in terms of functionality and recyclability.”

Last month, DS Smith unveiled its DryPack seafood box for seafood processors.
