DS Smith, a manufacturer of fibre-based packaging, has introduced the DryPack seafood box, a recyclable and water-resistant solution designed to assist seafood processors.

The company claims that its DryPack is a Fulfillment by Amazon (FBA)-approved product that can maintain fresh fish below 40°F for over 40 hours when filled with ice.

The company highlighted that DryPack is the only container board seafood box approved for air freight by the International Air Transport Association.

This approval enables seafood processors to safely ship fresh fish over both short and long distances.

The product is delivered to processors in a flat form, helping to reduce both incoming freight expenses and fuel emissions.

DS Smith is producing the DryPack boxes at its specialised packaging facilities in the US, employing its patented Greencoat technology.

This technology is said to offer a food-safe, moisture-resistant, recyclable coated box solution with United States Department of Agriculture, Canadian Food Inspection Agency, US Food and Drug Administation, and FBA certifications.

In addition to seafood packaging, Greencoat technology is used in the fresh poultry and produce sectors to substitute conventional wax-coated boxes, the company said in a press release.

Through the introduction of DryPack, DS Smith seeks to advance its sustainability objectives by eliminating plastic from the packaging industry.

DS Smith North America marketing director Cheryl Holliday said: “DS Smith is changing how the seafood industry delivers seafood, salmon and other fish from catch to customers with DryPack, a proven, 100% recyclable, fibre-based box that meets uncompromising standards and stands up to the rigour of processing and transportation.”

Last month, DS Smith was acquired by sustainable packaging solutions provider International Paper.
