Mondi has partnered with Evonik to introduce a recyclable, ready-made paper bag for storing chemical powders.
The packaging is designed to reduce the environmental impact of transporting fumed silica. This substance is used in a range of industrial and consumer products.
Evonik began exploring environmentally friendly packaging alternatives in 2022. The company worked alongside Mondi to devise a solution that removed plastic-coated layers.
The final design is a two-layer paper bag, which is 30% lighter than its predecessor.
Mondi evaluated the new packaging using its internal Product Impact Assessment system.
Evonik carried out thorough testing to ensure the bags met safety and performance requirements. The bags are now being deployed commercially following successful trials.
The bags are made from high-porosity kraft paper, which provides durability and flexibility.
A minimal spot coating is applied, allowing the bags to be securely sealed after filling. They meet recycling standards under CEPI v.3 and 4evergreen guidelines, the company said.
Mondi Paper Bags Germany sales director Florian Ullrich said: “Valve bags are designed for high-speed filling, and with sensitive contents such as these speciality chemical powders, high-quality material, and secure closing options are also paramount.
“Being able to deliver and indeed improve on these elements, while reducing the carbon footprint of the packaging, was a challenge we were delighted to answer alongside Evonik.”
Evonik aims to minimise waste while maintaining product protection. The bags are designed to handle vacuum chamber conditions and allow efficient filling.
Mondi’s paper structure enables quick air release and reliable sealing, the company said.
Once filled, the bags are palletised and shrink-wrapped for storage and delivery. The packaging process is designed to safeguard product quality during handling, and it complies with Evonik’s specifications for strength and transport readiness.
Evonik Smart Effects’ sustainability transformation head Susanne Pellengahr said: “At Evonik, we are committed to enabling transformation and going beyond the familiar.
“In the Smart Effects business line, we collaborate closely with our partners on projects focused on CO₂ reduction, portfolio transformation, and the circular economy.
“Our partnership with Mondi on packaging transformation exemplifies how every part of our business is aligned on the same sustainable path.”
