Portugal is preparing to launch its national deposit return scheme (DRS) for single-use beverage containers by 2026.

The scheme will be administrated by the non-profit company SDR Portugal, with Sensoneo, a waste management technology business, providing the necessary IT solutions.

Sensoneo’s technological platform will manage key aspects of the DRS, including its reverse logistics process.

The platform will focus on overseeing the movement of containers, as well as warehouse and transport operations.

Additionally, various mobile applications will be introduced to improve communication and coordination among all involved stakeholders.

Portugal’s plan includes establishing a network of collection points, with estimates ranging from 7,000 to 10,000 locations.

One of the distinctive aspects of Portugal’s DRS is its integration of the hotel, restaurant, and catering sectors (HoReCa).

While Malta launched its own DRS in late 2022, Sensoneo believes that Portugal’s scheme will act as a model for larger neighbouring countries.

Sensoneo aims to build on its experience from Malta’s DRS, ensuring that these HoReCa venues contribute to the scheme’s success. This integration will help achieve higher collection rates across a variety of industries.

In January this year, the UK government announced plans to introduce legislation for a DRS for bottles and cans across England, Scotland, and Northern Ireland.

The implementation of the scheme is scheduled for October 2027. Once implemented, consumers will be financially encouraged to return their empty containers to collection points.
