German construction chemicals manufacturer Schomburg has selected the NorDiVent film solution developed by Berry Global to advance its sustainable packaging solutions.

NorDiVent film is a ventilated polyethylene (PE) bag, incorporating 50% post-consumer recycled (PCR) plastic content.

Schomburg has transitioned its construction chemicals powder products from traditional paper packaging sacks to Berry’s customised solution.

This move is part of Schomburg’s strategy to diminish product losses and reduce its carbon footprint.

The NorDiVent film bags are claimed to offer several benefits over their predecessors, including water resistance, recyclability, and the use of recycled plastic, which cuts down on the reliance on virgin materials.

Furthermore, Berry has reportedly downgauged the NorDiVent bags by 7.14% while integrating 50% PCR plastic, without compromising bag performance. This adjustment has led to an approximate 39% reduction in global warming potential.

NorDiVent bags are designed to be durable and waterproof, allowing air to escape in a dust-free manner, thus providing effective moisture protection, claims the company.

This feature is crucial for products that require dry conditions and enables the sacks to be stored outdoors. The film’s high tear resistance also enhances product protection, minimising spillages and waste across the supply chain.

Additionally, the film quality supports printing in up to eight colours, enabling branding and maximising shelf presence.

Berry Global Flexible Films Division sales director Frank Heseding said: “The solution we have devised for Schomburg demonstrates our technical skills in the design and manufacture of products that support both our own and our customers’ sustainability objectives, while maintaining the highest levels of quality and reliability.

“It underlines our belief that we can achieve sustainability through innovation and when all areas of the supply chain are aligned.”

The inclusion of PCR plastic in the NorDiVent film forms part of Berry’s B Circular initiative.

Berry Global’s European Flexibles division has reported a 36% year-on-year increase in the use of PCR PE across various film products.

Last month, Berry agreed with Amcor to create a consumer packaging solutions entity through an all-stock transaction.
