British clothing brand TOAST has joined forces with packaging start-up Kvatt to trial a reusable delivery system aimed at reducing waste from online orders.
The initiative extends Toast’s focus on sustainability to its packaging processes.
Established by Swiss founder Gianfranco Bachtold, Kvatt develops packaging designed to be reused multiple times, tracked through software, and returned after use.
Customers can choose to receive their orders in these reusable parcels for a fee to support the system’s end-to-end logistics. Each package is intended for up to ten delivery cycles before it is repurposed.
The scheme forms part of a larger pilot involving other UK retailers such as Universal Works and Sirplus.
Customers opting in at checkout receive their items in Kvatt’s packaging, which can be returned by post using a prepaid label. After being sent back, the bags are cleaned, checked, and put back into circulation.
Kvatt’s technology monitors the journey of each package and collects environmental data throughout its lifecycle to provide retailers and consumers with insights into emissions savings and waste reduction.
The pilot will run beyond World Earth Day, observed on 22 April 2025, with results expected in the coming months.
Toast brand director Rosie McKissock said: “At Toast, we believe every decision, big or small, shapes the future. This pilot is one small step in our ongoing journey to reduce waste and tread more lightly.”
Through this collaboration, Toast and Kvatt aim to contribute to long-term changes in retail logistics by reducing packaging waste and promoting reuse in e-commerce.
Bachtold said: “Through our service, your Toast item is delivered in a returnable mail bag with instructions.
“You just attach the prepaid label on the back, drop the empty packaging in any post box around the country, and it comes back into our system.”
